Harvey Sutherland (DJ SET)
Harvey Sutherland’s debut album Boy was crafted in a loop between his studio and psychotherapy sessions, embodying his self-described “neurotic funk.” Rejecting the archetype of the faceless electronic producer, the Melbourne-born artist embraced awkwardness and oversharing, even putting his face on the album cover.
Known for cult disco singles and lo-fi cassette funk, Sutherland’s early tracks like Bermuda and Priestess blended dancefloor energy with soul and disco influences. Boy elevated his artistry, earning widespread acclaim, including ARIA and Australian Music Prize nominations and the Music Victoria Award for Best Electronic Work. Resident Advisor praised his musicality as “head and shoulders above his peers,” with irresistible grooves and clever turns of phrase.
The album became a radio favourite, earning Album of the Week honours across key Australian stations and international support from NPR, BBC, KCRW, and KEXP. Its remix package featured club-ready reworks from DJ Plead, I.JORDAN, and others.
Drawing inspiration from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel, Sutherland’s machine grooves and signature synth tones have graced remixes and productions for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu, and BadBadNotGood. A versatile performer, he’s played Glastonbury, Berghain, and the Melbourne Recital Centre, cementing his reputation as a pioneer of eclectic, groove-driven sounds. Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.
